This is a response to the article that was published in The Daily Mail entitled Multivitamin Pills 'can do you more harm than good' By Fiona Macrae.
It’s time to try and set the record straight, the public must be so confused, which might be the intention, about the merit of using food supplements, as one minute the nutritional industry seems to have discovered the latest wonder pill and the next we are potentially doing great harm, and yet neither extremes can be reality. Good nutrition is everyday common sense.
There is so much legislation in the nutritional industry these days it’s hard to see how we could possibly represent a statistically significant danger to the public.
There has been for some time now a European Positive List For Food Supplement Ingredients, label declaration directives, not to mention the GMO and Allergen directives etc. This was, once again, such a one sided, poorly researched, exaggerated report that seems to accept everything one so called expert says without stopping to even question their reasons or the validity of their views, how can this be allowed to happen?
It’s also a much misrepresented concept that there is no research to support the use of good nutrition, there is a vast amount of well presented, often peer reviewed, research papers to support these views. It seems very wrong to me that no one seemed to attempted to discuss these amazing revelations with the nutritional industry itself, why is this?
Is there anyone out there who is prepared to take the time needed to understand the role good nutrition can play, if used properly as a preventative measure, to help support the nation and reduce the workload of GPs and the NHS. In a country where it’s reported that only 15% of women and 13% of men get the Governments very conservative suggested five A Day of fruit and vegetables and a reported one in six couples have fertility issues, isn’t it time to open our minds to the role good nutrition and food supplements could play in our daily lives. Come on let’s put the Great back in Great Britain.
However, to do such a review effectively, it’s essential when reviewing nutrition or nutritional supplements, to understand the real biochemistry behind this approach and the difference between the many nutrient types on offer, not all nutrients react in the body the same way, organic and non organic minerals are a key example.
